I really enjoy your blog. I always knew PIs were extremely busy people but you've opened my eyes to the process. As a departmental and now central research administrator, I always have done my best to help with the administrative parts of the grant process so my PIs can focus on their science. Do get to know the people who submit your grant applications at your university (pre-awards) and those who'll help you spend your money (post-awards). If you can establish those relationships, you'll be able to save a lot of time. I promise. And when you get big enough and have to go through an audit, you'll want these people in your corner. Extra points if your research admin is a certified research administrator (CRA) certified through the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA). The exam is a nightmare so if s/he has passed it, you've got a research admin who is something special.
